How to Rent Out Your GPU for AI and Earn Crypto (2026 Guide)
MyAi Network · · 9 min read
Consumer GPUs sit idle roughly 90% of the time, while AI teams queue for datacenter capacity that takes years to build. That gap created a real market: networks that route AI inference jobs to hardware people already own, and pay the owner for every job completed. This guide explains how renting out a GPU actually works in 2026, what you can expect to earn, and how payouts are verified — using the MyAi network as the working example, since we publish our full payout math.
Two ways to rent out a GPU
The market splits into two models. Long-lease marketplaces rent your whole card to one tenant for hours or days — good rates for datacenter-class GPUs with fast uplinks, but your machine is occupied and the buyer expects server-grade reliability. Job-based networks instead send your machine individual inference jobs when it's idle. Each job takes seconds to minutes, you keep using your computer normally, and payment accrues per job. For consumer hardware — a gaming PC, a Mac mini, a spare laptop — job-based networks are usually the only practical fit, and they're what the rest of this guide covers.
What the work actually is
The dominant workload is LLM inference: a buyer (increasingly an AI agent rather than a human) submits a prompt, the network dispatches it to a provider running an open model — Llama, Qwen, DeepSeek, Mistral — and the provider returns the output. On MyAi, providers run models locally via Ollama; the network handles routing, verification and settlement. Your hardware never sees who the buyer is, and inference runs on your machine — there's no central log of the content.
How payouts work (real numbers)
MyAi credits every verified job with compute units × (output tokens ÷ 1,000) × tier multiplier × reputation multiplier. Larger models carry more compute units because they demand more from your hardware:
| Model | Compute units | 500 output tokens, consumer tier, reliability 1.0 |
|---|---|---|
| Llama 3.2 3B | 0.5 | 0.5 × 0.5 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 0.375 MYAI |
| Qwen 2.5 7B | 1.0 | 1.0 × 0.5 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 0.75 MYAI |
| Qwen 2.5 Coder 14B | 2.0 | 2.0 × 0.5 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 1.5 MYAI |
| Qwen 3.5 / 3.6 27B | 4.0 | 4.0 × 0.5 × 1.0 × 1.5 = 3.0 MYAI |
Tier multipliers default to Datacenter 0.7×, Consumer 1.0×, Browser 1.0× and Mobile 1.2×; the reputation multiplier runs from 0.5× to 1.5×. There is no per-job minimum. On-chain payouts have not started yet: verified jobs are recorded to your pending balance today, and once payouts are switched on they run every Sunday at 02:00 UTC for balances of at least 10 MYAI — each one a real ERC-20 transfer on Base you can check on Basescan. Full schedules live on the tokenomics page.
The honest caveats
- Earnings are capped. Each hardware tier (consumer, mobile, browser, datacenter) has a daily gross-accrual cap, and the network has a weekly payout cap that halves on a published schedule. When demand from providers exceeds the cap, everyone is paid proportionally and the remainder rolls forward.
- Quality is enforced. Verifier agents spot-check jobs; providers that return fraudulent or low-quality results get slashed — up to 50% of a day's gross — and lose reputation, which costs future job flow.
- MYAI is a token, not a paycheck. Its value moves with the market, and the network is pre-TGE: pending balances are paid in MYAI on Base once payouts start, and no token value is guaranteed.
What hardware qualifies
If your machine can run a browser, it can participate — the network matches job size to hardware class. A modern GPU (an RTX 3060 and up, or Apple Silicon) serves mid-size models; CPUs and phones serve small ones; multi-GPU rigs qualify for the datacenter tier and its higher caps. There is no minimum spec and no commitment: pause any time with one click.
Getting started in three steps
- Install. Run the one-line installer from the earn page (Linux or macOS; Windows is not supported yet). It sets up Ollama if needed; no sign-up.
- Run idle. The client picks up jobs only while your machine is idle. Zero disruption while you work or game.
- Set a wallet. Add a Base wallet address for when payouts start. On-chain payouts have not started yet; the planned cycle is weekly.
FAQ
Can I really rent out my GPU for AI work?
Yes. Decentralized compute networks route real AI inference jobs to consumer hardware. On MyAi, a Linux or macOS machine — or even a browser tab — can register as a provider and earn per verified job. Rewards are recorded to a pending balance today; on-chain MYAI payouts on Base have not started yet.
How much can I earn renting out a GPU?
It depends on network demand, your hardware tier, and which models you can serve. MyAi credits each verified job by output tokens, weighted by model size (compute units), your hardware tier and your reliability score — there is no per-job minimum. Earnings are capped by tier-wide daily limits and a network-wide weekly payout cap, so treat any projection as an estimate, not a promise.
Does renting out my GPU damage it?
AI inference is a normal compute workload — comparable to gaming — and runs only while your machine is idle. It does not overclock hardware or bypass thermal limits the way aggressive crypto mining setups sometimes did.
When do I get paid?
Verified jobs are recorded to your pending balance today. On-chain payouts have not started yet; once switched on, they run weekly (Sundays 02:00 UTC) as an MYAI transfer on Base for balances of at least 10 MYAI with a wallet address set.
Nothing in this article is investment, financial, legal or tax advice. MYAI is a utility token for compute settlement; it may lose value, and earnings depend on network demand. Figures describing the MyAi protocol reflect the published whitepaper and live network configuration at time of writing and are subject to change by governance.
